HW #3

I read the article: FBI To Get More Cyber Crime Agents by Mathew J. Schwartz. The date of publication was December 20th, 2011 and the source is; http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/government/232300860?queryText=cyber+ethics

According to the House Committees bill, the FBI is "the only agency with the statutory authority, expertise, and ability to combine counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal resources to neutralize, mitigate, and disrupt illegal computer-supported operations domestically," An increase in funding will prove critical for the FBI, giving them more resources to cut down on the increasing issue of cyber crime. The FBI has a requested budget of $166.5 million for 2012, which is a 13% increase from last year, a clear example to the rise of online intrusions.

With the increase in money, the FBI now has cyber squads in all 56 departments across the country, as well as an extra 1,000 specially trained cyber agents. This is a drastic change for one agency over a one year period of time. This article is a perfect example of how serious of an issue cyber theft is becoming. It is clearly up to the FBI to stop this problem, which is a lot of additional pressure on them.

When asked how he felt the increased budget would help the agency, Nick Selby, a Law enforcement and risk management consultant had this to say; "the funding levels remain ludicrously low." He believes that in order to sincerely stop this problem, the bureau will need more money. The amount of crimes via the internet is consistently rising throughout the country, it is a problem that should not be taken lightly and should have unlimited resources to make sure it is controlled.

  1. Tyler, It is pretty unbelievable to see how much money the FBI is willing to spend the stop the cyber warfare, considering is just this past year they increased by 13 percent! Now more than ever it is become a huge issue and a security threat to many countries. My article was about Israel being attacks by hackers, there was an airline that had flight times being tampered with. No one was hurt because of the attacks, but it almost served as a warning, showing how powerful the hackers really can be. They should not be taken lightly, as you explained above, especially considering how much the world is coming to rely on technology, when what we rely on fails on us, it creates chaos.

  2. Wow, Tyler i'm glad you chose this article. I had no idea this was all going on and the money spent is unbelievable! Those facts are great! I never would have thought that the FBI would get involved in hacking scandals, but it really makes sense! It is good to know how serious they take it. It is also interesting to me that they have a 13% raise in budget for this specific plan. My article also said that hacking and cyber terrorists would be on the rise in 2012, so it's good to see it here as well!
