Memphis  Cops  Get Smart

I chose to talk about this article because the title is very catchy and the title of it also caught my eye because I am a criminal justice major and I was really interested in reading this article. The article talks about crimes in Memphis. It basically talks about how the world of technology is evolving and how cops can do crime reports on their smart phones they use data analysis to cut crime, pollution and traffic congestion. Crimes such as robberies, burglaries and forcible rapes in Memphis fell to the lowest level in a quarter-century in 2010, reflecting stepped up reliance on technology to fight crime, according to researchers at the University of Memphis.

While Memphis’s focus has been on reducing crime, other cities such as London are using smart city tools to deal with challenges posed by population growth, as cities attract more people than rural areas for the first time. Last year, about 50.5 percent of the world’s population, or 3.5 billion people, lived in cities, according to a March 2010 report from the United Nations. By 2050, the urban population is forecast to rise to 69 percent.is.

This is crazy to think about and how technology has changed so quickly and rapidly. Its not like its cheap to its going to cost them a lot of money.  Over a decade, cities will invest $108 billion in related tools, according to Pike Research, creating a windfall for software makers such as IBM, device manufacturers like HTC and Siemens AG, Europe’s top engineering company, Bloomberg Businessweek.com reported.

This is a great idea because I think it is smart and more efficient and the information gets around faster thru cops than it does actually writing the report out. Also it’s a good thing because it said the crime rate in Memphis has dropped to an all time low because of this technology but with all the money you are going to spend on this product lets hope we are not in  for another depression.

  1. Tom, this article was very interesting, after reading your blog I actually went back to the website and read the entire thing and it was extremely interesting. I almost wish I picked this one because it would have been easier to write about. It is crazy to think about how police officers were writing reports with pencil and paper, then putting it into their computers, and now it’s as easy as submitting it via Smartphone. As we both can see the word is quickly transferring to relying on Smartphone’s, you don’t see many people without one these days. It’s really surprising to see how much technology has been able to affect something such as crime rate in Memphis. I think as a world we are moving in the right direction to become more organized and uniform. Good blog.

  2. Hey tom, I enjoyed the article you chose and your blog. I also agree with Kevin’s point about how our world is transforming into relying on technology such as our smart phones. I know personally I rely on my smart phone to do almost everything. It has my calendar, work schedule and all of my phone numbers ( and I don’t think I know anyone’s phone number anymore by heart). Basically I rely on my Iphone for almost everything. And to go back to the article I think it is a good use for police officers to use their smart phones for crime reports and to analyze data to crime, pollution and traffic congestion. This helps police officers do their job better and ultimately help us. To me this is just one of the first steps, pretty soon every profession will rely on their smart phones to help with their daily tasks.
