Health Care BOOM!

Drugmakers mine data for trial patients
By:Carol Eisenberg

www.Businessweekly.com

In the article, it explains that drug makers can spend years and approximately $1 Billion dollars only to release a new drug to the public. High profile drug manufacturers such as Pfizer are looking for ways to be more efficient in their attempts. they have thought of a new way to purchase patient information from hospitals in order to generate more sales and to run trial studies on groups of people that would in fact be more effective rather than randomly asking the public to start a trial run for a prescription drug.

Its believed that thee are groups of people all over that are worried their information could technically be bought, sold and used to drug makers all over the world. Also, if this is possible, doctors will be targeted to give information to the creators of the drugs. Programs similar to this have already began as in New York records were collected in order to identify and enroll patients into new drugs on the market. This testing was estimated to generate $75 Million dollars annually if organized and implemented correctly. There is now a program called PACer which stands for the Partnership to Advance Clinical Electronic Research. With PACer, companies such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Bayer Healthcare help operate the program.

In order for a company to use the indentifying mechanism, the company must pay PACeR to query records and compile a list of patients that could potentially benefit from the drug at hand.

"We're not dumping big buckets of de-identified data anyplace", stated Dr. Krusch I think that this was absolutely, positively foreseen as our management information systems have reached their peak and companies want to seek the profits in the industry that continues to flourish. I think that if the query checks are done, a fraction of the cost to do the query should be donated to charities and funds for those who are ill. We need to think of ways to cure cancer and other deadly illnesses. The only way we will be able to solve any serious issues is if we have researchers research, which can be expensive.

Payvment Uses on Facebook

In the article How Payvment Uses Facebook's Expanded Open Graph by David F. Carr it askes “What does it mean when a Facebook user clicks "like" on an item for sale--that they have it and like it, or that they would like to have it?”A CEO Christian Taylor talked about the operations of e-commerce on Facebook. “Like' never worked for us the way it worked for other mediums," Taylor said. Liking a link to a news story or video may be fairly clear, but in shopping, "'like' is ambiguous," he said. That's why the expanded vocabulary of Open Graph actions Facebook announced recently was so important, he said” they were able to make a wants and owns button to better find there market using facebook. “Open Graph is Facebook's model for integrating external applications and allowing them to execute authorized actions against user and business accounts. At the same time that it introduced its new Timeline user profile in September, Facebook introduced a handful of new Open Graph verbs, primarily to allow media sites to post to the news feed when someone read an article or listened to a particular song. Some of these also took advantage of a "frictionless sharing" model, in which, for example, Spotify will automatically post to the Timeline every song the user listens to through the service.this could be a issue for companies to get pass, because of the privacy settings that users can use to block companies from posting on your wall or page.

Facebook has been working closely with Payvment to insure that it does not go so badly as beacon did when users protested its use. "This could be a replay of Beacon, if done wrong," Taylor said. “The new "want" button functions as a sort of social wish list, something that friends might consult ahead of a birthday or other occasion. Taylor said he wasn't sure shoppers would take the time to click "own," but it turns out many will, in search of bragging rights.” So you could use this to get something a friend might want or use it to show off something that you might already have to the public. “Facebook is starting to approve new Open Graph verbs as part of a more routine process, open to all developers. Taylor said Payvment would like to put more such applications in place--for example, to signal when a user has posted a product review.”

Pinterest is sweeping the nation, people are tweeting about it and talking about how fun and easy it is to use.  I recently learned about Pinterest and how it works.  It is not something I would probably use but I also said that about both Facebook and twitter and look at me now, a frequent tweeter and an EX “Facebook creeper.”  With Pinterest you can pin things that you enjoy looking at such as recipes, quotes, decorations, and cute pictures.  You are sharing things you love with people who follow you.  It has become really big for people to use when planning a wedding.
So I chose to look at the article “Why Pinterest Trumps Facebook at Social Commerce, For Now” The article talks about how Pinterest is slowly starting to become very popular and how it is not as popular as Mark Zuckerburgs 100 billion-dollar company Facebook but it is starting to gain magnitude.  In the article they say “You go to a bar because that where your friends are, or other people you might want to meet. You go to a craft fair because that’s where the cool stuff is.”  I think that was an awesome analogy.  I think Facebook is becoming too advertised and I think that’s why people are annoyed with it and are starting to turn to other media sites because Facebook is a dying age.
I have never used Pinterest but it is something I am considering getting into just because of all the positive feedback I am hearing about it.  I think being involved with any type of social media at this day in age is imperative to advancing to future endeavors.  I am happy they had this article up because it gave me the experience to look at the article but then I went onto look at the Pinterest website and I think it is so interesting.  You can pin food and anything that is on it.  It just is an opinion of things that you like and that INTEREST you hence the name Pinterest.  Glad I read the article and learned something new!

The article I chose for this assignment is called “7 Things CEOs need to know about mobile commerce “and was published on 2/20/2012, on Forbes.com. This article was about the recent boom in mobile commerce. Mobile commerce ranges from mobile payments to mobile couponing and to location-based discounts. This article answered the big question with seven things for CEOs and business leaders to know on about mobile commerce. The first thing you need to know according to the author is mobile commerce is here and here to stay. According to eMarketer 50% of Americans own a smart phone now, this has caused the emergence of apps for Apple iOS and Android phones have opened up a huge market. Personally I own an IPhone and there is basically an app for everything I can think of now. I find a new app almost every week that I use, from games to apps such as Layar. The second thing is normal people start buying from their phones. Last year Starbucks was the leading company in terms of mobile payments, transactions and dollars in the world with their app that allows you to purchase a coffee from your phone. Shopping or making purchases from your phone is as become popular among smart phone users (79%) and this is a trend that will only grow in 2012 with more companies trying to use this technique. The next thing to know is there is no mobile payments winner yet. A lot of companies are going to try out mobile payments this year but with many top companies like, Google, Paypal and Visa there is no clear cut winner for 2012. Another thing to know for mobile commerce is to pay attention to privacy. This is a hot topic of 2012 with mobile commerce because people keep a lot of personal information on their phones like their address books and it is going to be important to keep things like these private. Another important thing to know is mobile advertising and the potential it has. A trend that is true with almost every smart phone user is if you own a smart phone you are glued to it every free moment you have. With its waiting before a dentist appointment or on your lunch break at work, if you have a smart phone that will be your means of entertainment when you have a free moment. This presents a huge advertising opportunity to businesses. The sixth thing to know is mobile is not just an extension of the web. Going mobile is not the same as the emergence of the World Wide Web, going mobile offerings a lot more because a smart phone is always on the owner and the opportunities never end. The final thing to know about mobile commerce is apps are not dead yet. People have been claiming apps are going to be a thing of the past with hybrid technologies of apps and the mobile web becoming the new thing with companies like Facebook who have already began using them. I found this article very interesting because I too feel that mobile commerce is our future. Smart phones today can do things we could have never pictured even just a year ago, proving there is no limit to the power of our smart phones.

Microsoft ERP Release Streamlines Retailing

The article I am going to talk about today is about Microsoft releasing streamlines in retailing and what this is going to be is a industry specific version of the vendors flagship ERP system that is designed to eliminate barriers that could be holding many retailers back like and example of this is it eliminates data silos by combining point of sale, inventory , supply chain, and financials into on application these are the components that cobble together with separate software and vendors. You may be wondering why they would want to be using this type of application for their business well because of the recant economic times this makes it easier for customers to buy whether they are in the store or online or even on the go they can still use the store and buy what they want. Another good thing about this application is that you can keep track of customers buying behaviors and maybe send them specific adds for things or maybe coupons for things that are going on sale that week.

Also another cool feature about this application that would help out a lot of businesses is this application allows for consistent customer experience that allows for customers to order online and then pick it up later that day and for many businesses before it was not possible because they would say they don’t have the technology for It yet  and also something that will help with sales is this program also runs a retail multichannel management system that ensures that promotions delivered through mobile devices or social channels will be recognized and redeemable through the in-store POS system. Similarly, in-store personnel will be able to see transactions that were conducted online, so customers will be able to return merchandise to stores even without the receipt. Also this software is able to run with 25 countries and has 23 local langues and this will help with trading and selling online with other countries also some other feature of this is include prebuilt, role-based user interfaces--think salespeople, store managers and regional managers in a retail setting. AX 2012 also has embedded business intelligence and analytics capabilities that can be used to deliver dashboards and reports with the aid of Microsoft's SQL Server Reporting Services

Why Pinterest Trumps Facebook at Social Commerce, For Now”
Author - Jeff Bercovici
Published On - 2/21/2012

I decided to choose this article because there is a constant debate between Facebook and pinterest. I personally do not have a pinterest but I hear great things about it. It is an up and coming social site much like the growing Tumblr. This article scratches the surface on what these websites are doing. It compares Facebook to going out with friends to a bar and how Pinterest is like going to a craft fair. You don’t care about people selling things at a bar, in fact it’s annoying but at the craft fair it’s normal.  It is very true that when on Facebook no one cares about what is going on the sidebars! I personally could not name any off the top of my head! On pinterest however it is not uncommon to see something you like, or pay attention to the things that pop up, because they are relevant to what they are doing.  The article also discusses how Facebook was wrong about their expected reaction to the advertisements on the side of the screen.  They thought that because they had such specific audiences the ads would pay for themselves do to target markets, but as we all know we don’t pay attention.

I agree with everything in this article, it was a great read and made me want to get a pinterest. It is very quick so I suggest everyone read it!!
Homework Number 6
Pinterest Over Facebook

It is said that retailers are losing faith in Facebook as a platform for e-commerce, it seems, they’re warming up to Pinterest. Which if you don’t know what Pinterest is it’s another social site that is much smaller than Mark Zuckerberg’s  100 billion dollar but faster-growing and its also much more targeted than facebook.

People thought that facebook would turn into a destination like it grew so rapidly that it will turn into a store, a place where someone would shop. But if you think about it that is like trying to sell people stuff while  they are hanging out with there friends at a bar. I think that Pinterest is a lot easier than facebook I haven’t figured out how to actually use  it yet. I just downloaded the application yesterday but from what I heard it is really easy and more targeted than facebook. People are losing interest in facebook and switching to twitter and other things this application is a perfect app for people to switch too. Pinterest is kind of life a craft fair where people would go to exhibit there stuff. And to also check out other vendors in the process. And what those vendors have to offer and there is a little of both where vendors can do the same. Think of it this way you go to a bar because that’s where your friends are or other people that you might want to meet. You go to a craft fair because that is where all the cool stuff is. The reason for this article is because facebook has an argument that its users don’t want to be bothered with commerce. But that is completely wrong because facebook dominates the display ad market and is projected to claim about 20% of the pie this year.  So facebook is still an e-commerce player but Pinterest is rapidly moving and much more targeted and people like this app and use it. Pinterest shows that if your business is selling stuff, a social network of stuff beats a social network of people.  Pinterest Over Facebook.

Homework #6

Facebook Shopping Apathy? Smart Plays On F-Commerce
I chose to do the article on Facebook shopping apathy because I don’t know anything about it. This article is one of many downplaying the value of Facebook to retailers. Facebook stores have not sold millions of orders, and have failed to articulate what the real opportunity is for social commerce.
In 2009 the first store was opened on Facebook. It was called 1 800 flowers where Facebook users would be able to check the profile and see what the company had to offer to the world. You could purchase items rite on their Facebook homepage, and later even made it possible to purchase through a users news feed.
Statistics say 53% of web users are on facebook. So why wouldn’t 1 800 flowers be a million dollar idea? Their problem was that their page was spamming everyone and shoving the product in user’s faces. What business should be using Facebook for is to advertise their products not actually sell them on the website.
Ticketmaster took the appropriate approach, they didn’t make a facebook page to replace or duplicate the page they already had. Ticketmaster set out to make it easier for Facebook users to discover upcoming events. When you like their Facebook page you can see on your news feed what concerts are coming up, ect. When you buy your tickets and you click that your “going” to the particular event, all your other friends can see that, making it a great promotion for Ticketmaster.
Delta airlines took the same approach they did incorporate the option to sell flights on Facebook but that wasn’t their only focus.
Advertising on Facebook now is absolutely essential. If you have a new business you have got to get on facebook it’s a great way to get your name out into the field and its free to create an account. Your able to share pictures, events, and special promotions you have, and its quick and easy.

Homework #6

The article that I decided to research was "How Big Data Is Changing The Way We Lead" by Forbes Magazine. The article was published on February 1, 2012 so it is relatively new. The reason why I chose this was the title really grabbed my attention and I thought it would be interesting to see how data affects the way certain organizations do things.

Institute Director for North Carolina, Dr. Michael Rappa is in charge of training thousands of students each year on how to become data scientists. These students are constantly being recruited by major companies for job opportunities. Rappa truly believes that "the net result of big data is a more decisive kind of decision making." In other words, Rappa believes that by studying large amounts of data on a particular topic, you will maintain more knowledge and more than likely make a more efficient decision. The more you are familiar with a topic the more comfortable you will be when deciding whats in the best interest of that topic.

Rappa went on to mention the benefits of C-level executives who use the data-driven culture. The following quote really stuck out to me while reading this article.

"If you feel that you can trust your data scientists and the models they build, if your team can buy into a culture that values data, the grey areas that open the door to political infighting disappear.”

What Rappa is trying to say here is that if a large company is able to trust their data scientists and believe they are capable of providing the correct information for success than your company will be better off. Also, it will take away from the stress of other company executives.

This particular way of operating, "C-level" ownership is becoming more and more powerful. You are seeing more large companies such as Google adding these "data scientists" to their work force to enable successful feedback on certain information. Dr. Rappa has a well-respected and well-known institution going on in North Carolina and serves for one of the largest data scientist providers in the country.

Payments on facebook

How Payvment uses Facebook expanded open graph. What does it mean when a Facebook user clicks "like" on an item for sale--that they have it and like it, or that they would like to have it? That’s what this article was about. What really happens when you” “like” something on facebook. Christian Taylor he is the CEO of Payvment he had said 'Like' never worked for us the way it worked for other mediums," Taylor said. Liking a link to a news story or video may be fairly clear, but in shopping, "'like' is ambiguous," he said. Facebook announced recently was so important, he said. As part of a select group of Facebook application developers working with the company on pilot projects over the past few months, Payvment was able to define "want" and "own" buttons that now appear next to each product listing (although "like" is still there, too, for those who prefer to use it). This is showing that facebook model for integrating external applications that are allowing companies to see what users want. Think of it like this, you go on Target facebook page and they say like their page for gift cards and specials. You do it just because you love Target and as the company see that you like it will be able to mark down your account and know all of your info without you knowing. Facebook introduced a handful of new Open Graph verbs, primarily to allow media sites to post to the news feed when someone read an article or listened to a particular song. Facebook worked closely with Payvment to make sure there would be no repeat of Beacon, a social shopping feature Facebook introduced in 2007 and withdrew when users protested it was sharing data about their online purchases without their consent. "This could be a replay of Beacon, if done wrong," Taylor said. The new "want" button functions as a sort of social wish list, something that friends might consult ahead of a birthday or other occasion. Facebook is starting to approve new Open Graph verbs as part of a more routine process, open to all developers. In my eyes this artlive was confusing it didn’t have a true focus point. But what I got out of it was that facebook is going to keep an eye on what you like and specifically this one company.

Facebook Shopping

I read the article “Facebook Shopping Apathy? Smart Plays On F-Commerce.”  It is an article about Facebook-based companies shutting down due to lack of sales.  The article talks about how companies that tried to bring the product to the consumer have failed.  People who don’t want flowers aren’t going to buy flowers just because there is a Facebook page available for it, same goes for any other product out there.  If someone wants to buy something they normally will go to a website that provides that product, not a social media website.
However, there are companies that are incredibly successful with their Facebook innovations.  These companies include Ticketmaster and Jet Blue.  Instead of putting the product on a social media shelf, they instead allow users to brag about products and effectively make the consumer also a marketer.  By allowing Facebook users to directly connect to their own website and allowing ‘friends’ to like, and share, links these companies have created a network of people who talk about their products and bring their friends with them, creating more business.  For instance Jet Blue has made it much easier to organize group activities over Facebook, which allows people some organization when planning a spring break vacation.
I really agree with the idea behind this article, that in order to sell products over a social media platform you cannot just bring the product to the consumer.  You have to bring the consumer to the product by allowing people to brag about a new hairbrush, tell people the Blue Man Group concert they went to was the best, or to create an event for a flight to Cancun for spring break.

This article is from Bloomberg business week and is titled “China E-Commerce May Pass U.S. in 2015, Boston Consulting Says”. This article explains that most of China’s population is using online sources to purchase products. The article states that if China stays at this same rate of using e-commerce it will quadruple its use by 2015 according to Boston consulting. China is relying a lot more on e-commerce than the United States due to the fact that China has the biggest number of Internet users, with 485 million as of June 2011. China also has a larger population than the United States and therefore China has the most internet users and they all tend to shop online. This is becoming a problem for “brick and mortar” businesses in China because people are shopping online instead of going to stores and purchasing products. As compared to the United States many of us still purchase products at department stores and local businesses but we also use e-commerce as another way to get products but not as much as China according to the article. I believe that e-commerce has many pros and cons. Some pros are it is very convenient to shop using the internet, you can get online discounts and it is saves the sometimes frustrating trips to malls and department stores. On the other hand some cons to e-commerce can be that your products may be lost in shipping which has happened to me. Also your packages may not arrive on time which has also happened to me. It can hurt stores and malls because people do not tend to purchase products at these locations. E-commerce can be very convenient but I think that going to a store and talking with people face to face or trying on products before you buy them is the best way to shop. I personally do not like shopping online because I have had so many bad experiences with it. I have had products lost, damaged, not fit, and not arrive on time. The only things I do buy online are tickets and shoes because they are much cheaper online. I may not like e-commerce but after reading this article I now know that China does.

Facebook Insights
Facebook Insights provides data on user interaction with your Facebook page, demographics, and performance over time. Page administrators, application owners, and domain administrators are the only people who can view insights data for the properties they own or administer. The Insights program is a free service for all Facebook pages and Facebook applications and websites. The Social media monitoring tools are used to read between the lines. Some of the programs connect the dots and categorize the data for the administrators.  Two ways that administrators do this is Monitoring and listening. “Monitoring is a matter of gleaning hard data; listening is taking that data and looking at it over time through the lenses that are relevant for your company.
Collecting this data is essentially a way to trace what grasps consumers attention and what will potentially lead to some sort of transaction, it’s always about generating awareness and revenue. The companies that implement a Facebook insight application on the website are taking the information you provide by the information you type into status updates, conversation topics, and links that you have clicked on in the past. Internet market analysts have discovered a free and easy way to connect with the consumers and gather information by teaming up with a social media based website. And the whole process if free for them which is kind of unbelievable that they do not have to spend any money on market research and not much time either. They just have to set up the Insights program and sit back and wait to see what their target market wants based on the things that are said and done on the website. 24/7 coverage of the people you wish to sell your products or services to. In the past this would have been unrealistic because of how time consuming collecting customer feedback used to be, now it is as simple as reading a Facebook page were people unintentionally identify their wants and needs on a regular basis

Announcing YouTube Analytics

 http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2011/11/announcing-youtube-analytics-next.html
                                                                                                                                 Morgan Billings

Just when you think youtube can not get any more crazier, they now have released the next generation of the way we search videos and connect around the world. the new tool, which replaces YouTube’s Insight page and  will provide video viewing data that’s more user friendly for the average person.  The new YouTube Analytics tool is also intended to help people grow their channel subscriptions and see exactly what’s getting a positive reaction from viewers.

" Check out some of the latest features in Analytics:"
  • A Quick Overview: A new overview provides all of the information that you care about quickly, while also enabling you to easily access more detailed information.
  • More Detailed Reports: Analytics now includes more detailed statistics so that you can have a more precise understanding of your content and audiences.
  • Audience Builders: Discover which videos are driving the most views and subscriptions.
  • Audience Retention: See how far viewers are watching through your video in the new audience retention report. - http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2011/11/announcing-youtube-analytics-next.html
With this new technology people around the world can see more and more information about videos and where they come from, but is this new tool too revealing and could it cause a potential safety hazard to users or even hackers? personally i think the more information people around the world put on the internet the more dangerous it can be. if people can hack bank of america and the NYSE why would youtube be any different? yes, it is cool all the different features but when is enough enough?

Why P&G CIO Is Quadrupling Analytics Expertise

February 16, 2012 11:47 AM
Why P&G CIO Is Quadrupling Analytics Expertise
The article I chose was Why P&G CIO Is Quadrupling Analytics Expertise. Procter & Gamble CIO Filippo Passerini says he plans to increase fourfold the number of company staff with expertise in business analytics. First of all you may be wondering why, well  CIOs have to "prove" their worth and justify their place in the organization plus keep on doing things which appear "helping business”. Passerini noticed that people used to get reports which told them what happened, but not why and this bothered him.
So, his team first created this Business Sphere, a video platform that would represent real-time data to strengthen access even more by letting people join in regardless of the video system they're using, providing a key team member to be able to video in from an iPad, Droid smartphone, or even by PC. Passerini put the data visualization platform in place, knowing execs would complain that they need more data about XYZ. Execs can now rather than guessing what they want and collecting that to share and analyze point-of-sale, inventory, ad spending, and shipment data.
Now they can find out that there was a dip in detergent sales and try to piece together the reasons why after the fact, They now know what and why, but the cutting edge step is moving to understanding what will happen and why it will happen using modeling tools before they follow through on such advancements. I think what they have decided to do is a great plan, and will work well not to mention be able to grow on what they have already achieved.

Data Management

Data Management
Time for a New View of Data Management by Curt A. Monash is an article about “Database management is in a crisis, one that's only partly recognized.” In this article tell us how there is so many different components to data, with different jobs that people have. They are all made harder “the boggling complexity of relational schemas.” They think that all this is going cause the data management to fall “As schema diversity explodes, the pure relational model is collapsing under its own weight.” Thought they say there is a cure or replacement to this. “We must replace it with a radically different view of data management, which I'm calling DBMS2, for database management system services.”

Some key aspects of DBMS2 are one use the cheapest/ simplest set of applications “cheap online transaction processing DBMSs, high-end OLTP DBMSs, data warehouse appliances, XML-based document stores, highly distributed and/or small-footprint DBMSs, in-memory systems without their own persistent storage, or cross-corpus indexers without their own storage.” Also you should limit you schema and not go past two simple models of this. “master-detail for transactions, and hypercubes/star schemas for analytics. Anything inherently more complex is, with rare exceptions, better handled via the schema flexibility of XML. If you need to access data from a legacy application that violates these precepts, do so via XML-based Web services.” Though  most DBMS2 data will integrate into an XML. “DBMS2 is the antithesis of much current database theory. Rather than fighting modularity, DBMS2 embraces it. Rather than gathering administrative tasks in one huge hairball, it spreads them across many simple systems. Above all, unlike the Oracle pipe dream of a grand unified enterprise relational database, DBMS2 is a pragmatic, realistic continuation of what every large enterprise is doing today.” The Biggest reason for the embracement of the DBMS is it is low cost and traditional. ”For most enterprises, relational OLTP is approaching commodity status.”

The article that I decided to choose this week was about Kelly Blue book and how they are expanding to help give buyers and sellers a better idea on prices that they should either be selling or buying a car for. Anyone how has tried to sell a car has probably visited the Kelly Blue Book web site in order to get an idea of how much they should be selling their car for because most people have no idea what their car is worth. Kelly Blue Book (KBB) makes it possible with just a couple of simple questions about you car and what options it has to offer. “Until recently, the numbers were largely educated conjectures that Kelley analysts arrived at by running a handful of car sales and other metrics through a rudimentary pricing algorithm.”
Now the technology that they are using doesn’t just crunch the numbers so to say, they are using many different forms of data such as the location in which the car is being bought and sold. But with the new data that they are using to give their users a more accurate price they have had to ditch their old system and start using another data analyzer, “the company started using a new IBM Netezza Twinfin data warehousing appliance.” This has now allowed Kelly Blue Book to be transformed into a completely analytics-driven operation, said Shawn Hushman, Kelley's vice president of enterprise analytics.
With the changes that the company has decided to go with in the last several years has paid off for them because they are now reaching much more accurate prices for the users of their web site. “Kelley used to update car values once every five months, but it now updates values every week for more than 20,000 vehicles. "We could do it on a daily basis if we wanted to."

The article I chose to write my blog about this week is, “10 Cool Social Media Monitoring Tools” from The Brain Yard and was posted on August 11th, 2011. As you can tell by the name of the article it talked about ten tools you and use to help monitor your social media sites and your online reputation. The first tool is called, Facebook Insights. This is a free service built into Facebook data on user interaction with your page. The second tool is called HootSuite, which is a site that allows the user to monitor multiple social networks from a single dashboard and create customer reports. The next tool is called Klout and is designed to measure individual and brand influence. The next two tools were social mention , which is a free site that rates an individual or brand as they are mentioned and Raven Tools which uses data from Social Metion to see links to your brands or a keywords mention with a positive, neutral or negative rating to each mention. The sixth tool is Sprout Socail and this site lets the user manage, monitor and track their existence on social networking sites like: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The next tool is called is similar to Facebook Insights but for Twitter and is called Twitalyzer. This Twitalyzer is a dashboard on Twitter that measures the users impact based on several factors. Another tool mentioned in the article is called Unilyzer and this site develops a “Uniscore” which is the quality of your social networking presence with data on quality of a social network and referral rates.  The next tool is the ultimate way to track your social network reputation called Google Analytics. Google is the top dog on the internet in all aspects and with Google Analytics you integrate Google with your social network to see how your content is being shared on the web through social interactions. The final tool is for Twitter users and is called BackTweets. This was formally known as BackType and allows users to keep track on their Tweets. All of the tools mentioned in this article made me realize how important it is to keep track of your reputation on social networking sites. After reading this article I am highly considering using tools such as Facebook Insights, Social Mention and Raven Tools to keep track on my presence on social networking sites to make sure I present a positive image for future employers.

You know how everyone is on YouTube and they try to get famous off it well now YouTube announced a new way to take and set up your own YouTube channels so then you can find out who is watching as well as what countries are watching your videos and it even breaks it down to the percents of how many times that country watched the video and what gender watched the video as well. Another thing this article talks about is how you can almost make it into a job to be on YouTube and how these channels can now become more like free tv shows that you can watch online and you can even earn money off this as well and after reading this it took me by surprise to learn that now people are earning money off this now because before it was just a free way for people to put up funny videos and express

them self’s in videos as well I could have never thought this website would have gone to this level it is now with so many people on it that have either gotten famous off it or have made a living off of it by having new videos on it every day and they keep you up to date like the news do with the latest reviews of movies and videos to say what’s on their mind and i know a lot of people that have now gotten a lot of their information from these types of videos now because its faster than trying to watch what you want in the news then watching the whole news that day. Another this article talks about is how now they are making it easier to interact with your audience by seeing how popular you video is on live boards on and also they can leave videos in response to yours right on the same page and you can keep sending videos right back and forth and with this information you can make better videos and gain more viewers so then your channel will grow and then like I said before you can then make money off it

homework #5 Data Article

Drugmakers Mine Data for Trial Patients

Recently we have been finding that pharmaceutical companies are spending billions of dollars to bring a new drug to the market. This is mostly because they cannot find enough patients to do testing on. Drug makers are recently planning to make a deal with various hospitals to gain information on how specific drugs work on specific people, this deal is projected to make the hospitals money, and save the drug makers money “making medicine more of a science and less of an art”. There are some constraints ethically, and the government clearly puts restraints on releasing specific data of customers such as social security numbers. Drug makers are big potential customers of aggregated health data since drug development times have more than doubled in the past 20 years without a marked increase in the percentage of compounds successfully brought to market.
“The bottom line: A group of 13 New York hospitals will sell access to patient data to drug makers for $50,000 to $200,000 per search

Gaining data like this can be extremely difficult and time consuming. With the new process being implemented, drug makers are going to be able to save time and money while gaining data. Doctors and hospitals respect and like the idea because it makes drug makers more attractive research partners. Although it seems steep for drug makers to purchase data for up to $200,000 in turn it will actually be saving them money considering every day delayed can equal up to 1 million dollars loss for them.
I actually think this is a good idea from a business standpoint, but ethically it seems a little insane to sell data from hospitals. I know it is for a good cause, but the fact that certain patients who have cancer and other illnesses will be reveled may cause a large uproar for the hospitals. Even if these people want to help to show data on how the drugs work, they may not want their information revealed.

Memphis  Cops  Get Smart

I chose to talk about this article because the title is very catchy and the title of it also caught my eye because I am a criminal justice major and I was really interested in reading this article. The article talks about crimes in Memphis. It basically talks about how the world of technology is evolving and how cops can do crime reports on their smart phones they use data analysis to cut crime, pollution and traffic congestion. Crimes such as robberies, burglaries and forcible rapes in Memphis fell to the lowest level in a quarter-century in 2010, reflecting stepped up reliance on technology to fight crime, according to researchers at the University of Memphis.

While Memphis’s focus has been on reducing crime, other cities such as London are using smart city tools to deal with challenges posed by population growth, as cities attract more people than rural areas for the first time. Last year, about 50.5 percent of the world’s population, or 3.5 billion people, lived in cities, according to a March 2010 report from the United Nations. By 2050, the urban population is forecast to rise to 69 percent.is.

This is crazy to think about and how technology has changed so quickly and rapidly. Its not like its cheap to its going to cost them a lot of money.  Over a decade, cities will invest $108 billion in related tools, according to Pike Research, creating a windfall for software makers such as IBM, device manufacturers like HTC and Siemens AG, Europe’s top engineering company, Bloomberg Businessweek.com reported.

This is a great idea because I think it is smart and more efficient and the information gets around faster thru cops than it does actually writing the report out. Also it’s a good thing because it said the crime rate in Memphis has dropped to an all time low because of this technology but with all the money you are going to spend on this product lets hope we are not in  for another depression.

The article I chose was about a new social media monitoring application. Facebook has adapted this type of application and allowed for users to apply this type of monitoring to their personal facebook pages. This new application provides data on user interaction with your page, demographics, and performance over time. Only Page administrators, application owners, and domain administrators can view Insights data for the properties they own or administer. Insights are a free service for all Facebook Pages and Facebook Platform applications and websites. Facebook is one of the first social media networks to use this new application and it is becoming more common throughout other social media websites. The key with any of these social media monitoring tools is using them to read between the lines. Some of these tools do it for you, connecting dots between hard numbers to draw conclusions, and some require you to do some or the entire dot connecting yourself. That's the basic difference between monitoring and listening. Monitoring is a matter of collecting data as listening is taking that data and looking at it over time through the lenses that are relevant for your company. So using this type of monitoring in social media websites has allowed for users to be more active in on the website and add another feature for users to become familiar with. I believe this is a good idea for social media websites to use because it sets them apart from other social media website even though facebook is pretty much in control of the social media market. I also think it is a good idea because it allows for the users to be more active and be more familiar with the internet and new use of technology. I believe that many companies should adapt this system as social media has because it will allow them to collect all of their data and organize it so they can control every aspect of their business and learn from their mistakes. This is just another reason why facebook is as successful as they are because they are always trying new things and installing new technology to their operations.
