Tom Friedman created the book on globalization called The World is Flat, which is a creative way to look at the world. Although it doesn’t literally mean that the world is flat and not round, but rather that the world is not exactly what we perceive it to be. He uses examples such as when you pull up to certain MacDonald’s and someone comes over the intercom saying hello can I take your order, those people are not in the store they are actually at MacDonald’s headquarters in Colorado which in turn saves the store thirty seconds for your order. Ten years ago something like this wasn’t even an idea, but because the world is moving so fast ideas like this are developing every day. He speaks much of globalization, and how fast it is moving in our era and in a sense is making our world an even smaller place. Even though some ideas may seem outrageous, they may be the most logical way to do things.
In our generation we are so used to using textbooks to study and learn from in the classroom. Because it is possible in the near future it may just be that all books will turn to E-books. Everyone may be using I pads in the future to just download books and only carry around that one single table. Not only will it be more cost efficient but it will also be more convenient for students.
In reality I think what Tom Friedman is trying to say is in our world now, whatever can be done, will be done. And that leaves you the question: will it be done by you, or will it be done to you. If you have an idea, don’t wait to share it with the world, because if you have a brilliant idea chances are someone else will have thought of that idea as well and they will publish is potentially changing the world, and making it even more “flat”
what surprises me the most is the fact that im ordering food in florida and someone is taking my order in colorado. I really liked how you did your article and i agree with what you said about everything you said when it comes to how you said will it be done to you. sometimes you have to take chances when it comes to brilliant ideas and regardless of what people say. beacause like you said you never want to take that chance of someone else will have the same thought an or idea as you and no matter what in this world you have to take chances. you have the potential to change the world when you take your ideas and make something out of it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree and find it to be an eye-opener to see how much the world is changing. To order food at an MCD in Florida but your order is being placed by someone in Colorado is a first hand example of the world become more flat. 50 years ago you would have to order food by face to face conversation, and now you aren't even speaking to someone that works at the restaurant.
