Thomas Friedman is a very well known author of the book titled the world is flat. He claims that the world is flat due to technology, globalization and other reasons. He believes that coast to coast connection has been reduced due to all of these factors. This is why he believes the world is “flat” because many countries across the world can communicate and connect with each other faster and efficiently. There are ten different factors that go into Friedman’s world flatteners. These flatteners include the fall of the Berlin wall in 89, Netscape going public in 95, development of work-flow software, uploading, and outsourcing. The other five flatteners are offshoring, supply chaining, insourcing, informing, and the steroids of technology. All of these factors support Friedman’s phrase that the world is flat. All of these make sense to why Friedman believes the earth is flat; they all have to do with the growth of business and technology that allows for everyone across the world to be connected and efficient. As an example we saw on the youtbe clip in class Friedman explains that he was calling southwest airlines to change his flight and he asked the receptionist where they were. The receptionist replied that she was in her bedroom in Salt Lake City and was working from her home for the airline company. This proves that many companies are finding ways to help their employees and their customers. The employees work out of their home and use their phones and computers to connect flights for customers. Also this shows how technology has evolved to make the world “flat”, by connecting people all over the world through technology. I believe that Friedman’s most significant world flattener is Supply Chaining. This is a technological revolution that led to the creation of networks comprised of companies, their suppliers, and their customers, all of which could collaborate and share information for increased efficiency. This is what southwest airlines have done to make their company more efficient. Many companies are using supply chaining to make their companies more efficient and a better experience for the customers. I believe that this is the most significant world flattener because it allows for companies to be more efficient and it allows for the entire world to be connected through technology.
