The World is Flat

Thomas Friedman a writer for the New York Times, decided to write an inspiring book on globalization titled "The world is flat". Friedman goes into immense detail about how the world has been flattened "While we were sleeping".

While listening to this speech that he made at Yale University, some of the topics in his book he brings up really opens my eyes to how the world has progressed. He says that "everything we called the IT revolution in the last 20 years, was just the beginning" We are doing everything twice as fast, and from here on out we will expand the IT world faster and faster. The flattener that I thought was most interesting was from his Third chapter called "Triple convergence". This goes into detail about how all the 10 flatteners started to work together. This is very interesting to me how he talks about how we are now trying to horizontal ourselves, connect and collaborate around the platform of how all this ties together.

One thing that was brought to my attention from the story he said about SouthWest airlines was that In "Globalization 1.0" we waited in line to then speak to an employee, which will then do the transaction face to face to get your ticket. Then in Globalization 2.0 we received the E-Ticket machine, where to save time we could insert a credit card and do the transaction in half the time as before. When now in Globalization 3.0, we do all the work, we find out the flight online, pick the credentials we want and simply print out your boarding pass on your home printer. As Friedman says "southwest airlines, made you the ticket agent and they made you their employee" and that "you are paying southwest to be their employee". This was a huge eye opener to me because it goes to show how much the world has changed and we really didn't realize it was processing so fast. With the world's technology on the uprise, who really knows what could happen next? The possibilities are endless, and we will just keep flattening the playing field.
