intro Morgan Billings

Hello my name is Morgan Billings and I am from a small town located 20 miles south of Boston called Scituate.  I play golf here at Nichols which is fun because its free golf every day and you get to travel and play some of the best courses in New England. Off the field I am a TV salesman at Sears. It is a fun job because I love technology. But, it’s a commission based job so you have to be on your feet ready for the customer. On my free time I like hanging with friends going to bars and also have a strong interest in cars.  Other than that I am a sophomore at Nichols majoring in business. I use to live on campus but I hated it because of the rules and lack of space. So no I am renting an apartment in Webster which is nice because I have my own room living room and kitchen and never have to worry about public safety creeping around. The funny thing that people don’t know is it is thousands of dollars cheaper living off campus than on and you actually enjoy it more.
From this class I am looking to obtain information about computers and using that knowledge to benefit me in my career. Everything now is all technology and how people adapt to it to use it to their advantage so the more you are informed about it the better your decision at work will be. After reading the article it just shows how crazy of a world computer and information systems is. Long hours usually 50+ a week can certainly take a toll on the brain but their paychecks are pretty nice. The people who work for these companies are very smart and are always learning more and more every week. It is a fast paced environment with people solving different programming methods and fine tuning other computer related issues. These people do not leave until the problem is fixed or the deadline is met.

world is Flat!

In Friedman theory of 10 ideas of the world is flat the most important thing i think was Netscape coming out. "Netscape went public at the price of $28. Netscape and the Web broadened the audience for the Internet from its roots as a communications medium used primarily by "early adopters and geeks" to something that made the Internet accessible to everyone from five-year-olds to ninety-five-year-olds. The digitization that took place meant that everyday occurrences such as words, files, films, music, and pictures could be accessed and manipulated on a computer screen by all people across the world."So Netscape comes out it is cheap and allows people to communicate with people around the world. not  only this but also it is compatible for everyone to use.
though in his lecture he comes up with many flatteners that are great like outsourcing the fall of the Berlin wall was a great one ending communism and the cold war.Netscape was just more important because it allowed us to become more technologically advanced utilizing the internet as a tool for communication and information. Friedman is a smart man and Im sure if i had the book it would be a good read.

Friedman's Ten Flatteners

After watching the video in class about Friedman’s Ten Flatteners and from reading the textbook I would say he has some really interesting and valid points on why the world is flat and not round. First off he discusses the “steroids” of the world. Technology. Everything in this world revolves its self around the different types of technology. We are able to do everything and anything at the click of a button. For example, so many people use email instead of regular stamped mail because it gets from point A to point B in the matter of twenty seconds http://www.businessknowhow.com/directmail/ideas/compare.htm.

Another reason why the world is a flattener is the explanation of off shoring. Everything you call someone for tech support for some company you are most likely calling China or India. The ability to be able to offshore certain tasks from one location to another is absolutely incredible. Think about all the cars we have in the United States, I bet if we all opened the hoods to our cars almost every part will say built in China. We are able to get resources built in one place and assemble them in another.

This whole idea about the world being a flattener is absolutely eye opening. Friedman’s ideas all come from the idea on how much technology plays a role in the world. With the speed that everyone is capable of doing everything at, it’s allows the world to be communicating in the matter of seconds. For example, if my dad is in Europe, all I have to do is turn on my computer and hit the Skype button and I could be talking to him in the matter of seconds. Ever since the fall of the Berlin walls the idea that the world is one market has been able to make Friedman’s marketing points factual in my opinion.

About Justin

I am Justin Andrew DaRosa, and I am from Providence Rhode Island. I have worked as a Bus boy, Khols as a bagger and I have worked in construction for a couple of years. I currently am a resident assisted for the college. I'm a sophomore class of 2014 and I'm my classes vice president. I am a finance major. i enjoy doing lots of things like play basketball, football, baseball, play paintball, and workout.
I hope to learn about computers to help me be able to select a good computer in the future. Also make good computer decisions in the future for a possible company. I think it will just be overall helpful for my future.
I like how in the article it tells you how much a computer information manager makes the wages are high which is good but it doesn't specify about the job market how many jobs there are in this field or how many opening are coming up. it just not to specific with the one part that i think is important to know how many jobs there are.

The World Is Flat

Tom Friedman came up with 10 ideas as to why he believes the World is flat. In my opinion I think the most significant theory is Netscape goes public on August 9, 1955. I believe this is the most relevant idea to the World becoming flat because the worldwide usage of the internet has changed the world drastically. You can now order certain items from countries over seas and have them delivered to your home in just a few weeks, 50-100 years ago this was unheard of.
Also, the way business' use the internet is tremendously important. Many large corporations hold meetings visually over the web with clients thousands of miles away. Again, technology like this was a mere dream to people living in the early 20th century. The worldwide expansion of the web has made the world smaller, as Friedman discussed, and also has made it easier to accomplish certain goals that were extremely hard to obtain 50 years ago.
When I first heard Tom Friedman wrote a book called "The World Is Flat" I thought that this guy was a nut and just a far fetched believer. But after listening to his speech on youtube and doing more research about him I've come to realize he is actually a very intelligent man. The facts he presents and his was of thinking is fascinating and is a real eye opener to how to world is changing.

The world is Flat?!?!

In the World is Flat by Thomas Friedman, terms such as globalization, politics and technology are brought up stating how all these things are changing our world as we know it. He believes that the change was initiated within the last couple of years and will continue to expand.  The title is a metaphor for viewing the world as a leveled playing field in terms of commerce, where all competitors have an equal opportunity. Friedman seems very on the ball in his findings, persuasive and passionate about his work. He termed this period of time as Globalization 3.0. Globalization influences everyone all the time.   Globalization involves economists, political scientists, and government personnel control countless issues on social and cultural factors
Friedman classifies ten "flatteners" that he sees as leveling the global playing field. I thought that the most significant factor was the first mentioned. The first flattener is the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th, 1989.   The event had made global capital movement/trade possible; it enabled and smoothed over the progress of expansion in the European Union and introduced the “Euro.”    After 11/9/89 knowledge, ideas, and even economic policies could surged freely.
I was impressed with Friedman’s writing concerning our nation becoming more and more technologically advanced, and through creative imaginations the importance of Liberal arts is a known fact in order to succeed. The one thing that I don’t completely agree with what Friedman is when he mentions that the people or companies in America are lazy and are not prepared for globalization. Which is something that I just don’t find true, the actuality that we have been educating great minds so that our futures may be more advanced I find is a necessity and should be continued. If we didn’t continue these proceeds we would be limiting ourselves. Other than that I thought he brought up some pretty good points and made a few eye-openers.  The fact that he researched so much and had a large quantity of both facts and opinions makes his work believable.   You can tell through his writing that he is passionate about what he does and has successfully got his point across.

Netscape Changes Everything

In my opinion, I believe that NetScape, is Thomas Friedman's biggest and most significant flattener. On August 9, 1995 the launch of Netscape popularized the Internet and World Wide Web, which would eventually create a huge entity that is a part of everyone's life, and for a few people, a little to much.

The internet is now taking over the way we do everything, don't get me wrong I LOVE the internet. Facebook, Google, Twitter and Email make my life so much easier. Is there really a need though? What was wrong with sending letters, writing to someone, reading the newspaper and looking things up in books? Ask any typical college student and they have no idea what the Dewey Decimal System is. The internet has taken away from children growing up, instead of playing outside on bike's, 10 year olds are updating there facebook status.

In this article states that 93% of people now get there news from some sort of social media site. Thats scary!

It's a Flat World

Tom Freidman discusses the flatteners of the world.  He talks about the things that have happened in the world that has helped to bring the world closer together.  The flattener that has had the most impact on the world is the informing.  This is the flattener that involves Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, Bing, and every other web search engine out there.  This “Informing” flattener has allowed anybody from anywhere to look up an answer to any question.  Whether it is a boy scout in the woods googling “safe plants to eat” or a tourist in New York searching for the best restaurant.  It just makes life easier.  So easy and so popular in fact, that when I type “googling” it is an allowable word by English standards.
Need to know how to get to your friends house? Google it.  Trying to find a new job? Ask it.  Looking for an interesting news headline?  Use MSN.  Looking for something to purchase that you can’t find in any neighborhood stores?  Get on Bing, the most specific search aid of them all.  These are just a few basic uses of these search engine powerhouses.  They can find anything you could imagine.  If it’s on the internet, then it’s searchable.  Kind of scary to a point though.  If everything is searchable, then everything can be found.  So those embarrassing pictures your friend took of last Friday night when you got a little out of control?  Yeah, your future employer can find them, your parents can find them, your kids will be able to find them.  They just have to look hard enough.
The good news is that all the knowledge you can possibly imagine can be found at your fingertips, a few short presses on a touchscreen phone and you can settle the debate you are having with your roommate.  No more finding and asking 15 random people for a definitive answer to a question when you can just simply ask the genius computer system behind the simple Google search bar.

Friedman's Flatteners

In the year 2000 our world entered the new millennium and what is called Globalization 3.0 with a focus on groups and individuals. The forces or flatteners that lead us to this can be illustrated by Tom Friedman’s Ten Flatteners. His Ten Flatteners are: 1. fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, 2. Netscape goes public on August 9, 1995, 3. Development of work-flowed software, 4. Uploading, 5. Outsourcing, 6. Offshoring, 7. Supply chaining, 8. Insourcing, 9. Informing and 10. The steroids. To me there were three flatteners that were the most significant: Netscape going public, uploading and the steroids. First I feel Netscape going public is significant because it made the World Wide Web popular to everyone. The internet has become a huge tool for every person in the world to communicate, get information and stay connected. I personally cannot imagine the world today with the World Wide Web. The second flattener I feel is most significant is uploading. Uploading has made it possible for anyone to be able to create content and post it to the web. This has revolutionized the way we get information because virtually anything can be posted to the web for the rest of the world to access. One huge example of this is a website like Wikipedia, where it allows people to create page on anything and allows people to update the information to keep it as current as possible. The last flattener I feel is the most significant is what Tom Friedman called “the steroids”. The steroids refers to computing, instant messaging, file sharing, wireless technologies, voice over internet protocol, video conferencing and computing graphics which has improved all of the other flatteners. Instant messaging has allowed people to communicate faster than ever before and with wireless technology it has allowed people to communicate not only faster but anywhere. Now everyone in the world can text or instant message someone and get a response almost immediately. It has allowed business to have meetings with anyone in the world no matter where they are with video chats thus making the business world expand even more. These flatteners have changed the world like no one could have ever imagined and there is no sign for technology to stop growing anytime soon.

The World Is Flat?

Thomas Friedman’s ten reasons why the world is “flat”, analyzes how over the past century our globalization efforts. He explains how we got to be the way we are today with a strong international market for various reasons around business. I believed that the most important flatteners included the collapse of the Berlin Wall in late 1989. I believe that it represents the fall of communism, which is exactly what our own country doesn’t want. As of late 1989, there were software and computer companies beginning their voyage to brighten our technological future. In 1989, various computer programs were used to speed up the process of information. Word processer was one of the best inventions similar to the light bulb because it sparked so many other technological advances. The second most important leveler includes the creation of Netscape in 1995. Creating a network that could be used all over the world by all different types of people. By creating Netscape, both young and old could use a computer and research anything under the sun. With the internet available, education is endless. In order for our society as a whole to move forward we must analyze everything known to man in order to properly development. Lastly, I believe all of our new state of the art music players and held devices that help life that much easier. If there were no technological advances, how could we be as efficient? I believe that global socialization is a key factor in our global economies strength. I also believe that it is the knowledge that is developed by our generation that can change the world. We know that we need to develop our school programs and ensure that students stay in school until they at least graduate high school or reach the age of 18. I think that our economy will turn around very soon, and like Thomas Friedman stated, the Berlin Wall collapse ended communism. If that was true then it’s understood that our economical history compares to when we were ending World War 2. I enjoyed listening to Thomas Friedman; he is an extremely bright man.

the world is flat

I think that the most significant flattener was “uploading” because I think that it was then a way people to get what they wanted to on the internet to share with people all around the world what they thought was cool or what they wanted to show people. Also I think it was because then it gave people some confidence in a way because with uploading it gave anyone the opportunity to become a superstar even if it was only for a day. Another reason I think that uploading is a flattener is because then everyone tried to copy someone else and then a bunch of the same type of things started to pop up and it made it seem like everyone was trying to be the next star by copying this other person because they got famous by doing this so they try it and then after they do it they find out that five other videos came up that same day with the same concept. But another thing uploading gave us is the freedom to say what we wanted too about a certain song or a movie we watched and basically give us our own way to give our opinion on things. Another thing that uploading gave us is it gave a way for people who like to build programs a way to actually make programs and software and share it with other people and show that you don’t have to be a big company to make software and programs and they don’t even have to make money you can just do it for fun. But another way this is a flattener is the creation of blogs they started off simple enough as just a way for people to get out what they want to say but now it has become this huge deal and now everyone has to have one but it has also tunred the people who blog into almost an army that will if they get the smallest bit of info will run with it and blow it out of proportion and most people will believe it because they will get info sources they don’t know is true or borrow from other bloggers and you don’t know if their info is true and its just an endless chain.   David Lavoie

The World is Flat

Thomas Friedman a writer for the New York Times, decided to write an inspiring book on globalization titled "The world is flat". Friedman goes into immense detail about how the world has been flattened "While we were sleeping".

While listening to this speech that he made at Yale University, some of the topics in his book he brings up really opens my eyes to how the world has progressed. He says that "everything we called the IT revolution in the last 20 years, was just the beginning" We are doing everything twice as fast, and from here on out we will expand the IT world faster and faster. The flattener that I thought was most interesting was from his Third chapter called "Triple convergence". This goes into detail about how all the 10 flatteners started to work together. This is very interesting to me how he talks about how we are now trying to horizontal ourselves, connect and collaborate around the platform of how all this ties together.

One thing that was brought to my attention from the story he said about SouthWest airlines was that In "Globalization 1.0" we waited in line to then speak to an employee, which will then do the transaction face to face to get your ticket. Then in Globalization 2.0 we received the E-Ticket machine, where to save time we could insert a credit card and do the transaction in half the time as before. When now in Globalization 3.0, we do all the work, we find out the flight online, pick the credentials we want and simply print out your boarding pass on your home printer. As Friedman says "southwest airlines, made you the ticket agent and they made you their employee" and that "you are paying southwest to be their employee". This was a huge eye opener to me because it goes to show how much the world has changed and we really didn't realize it was processing so fast. With the world's technology on the uprise, who really knows what could happen next? The possibilities are endless, and we will just keep flattening the playing field.

Friedman's Ten Flatteners

During Thomas Friedman’s explanation of his book The World is Flat, he spoke on the second chapter of his book. In this chapter he outlined what he calls the ten flattening moments that brought the globe together. Most of the flattening moments came around the year 2000, and was the dawn of the modern technology age. I think that two of Friedman’s flatteners that were significant to me where one being when Netscape goes public on August 9, 1995 and the other flattener being when work-flow software became available. I feel that Netscape is one because it brought the world the browser and made the Internet easy to use and sharable as Friedman says, “it brought the internet alive.” The other flattener that I thought was significant was the development of work-flow software because it goes hand and hand with Netscape. This is because Netscape brought the Internet together and work-flow software brought people together on their computers. This flattener made it so that no matter what computer you were on, you could be connected with other people that were on different computers.

Looking back only ten years ago I can remember using a computer and those two components not even being an issue; and so I found it interesting that I am grow up right in the middle of all these new and upcoming technologies that I never knew life without. But now that technology is taking it to the next level with computers that you can interact with on different websites such as Skype and Instagram along with many more. Also at some new restaurants that have the new Coke machines that have the touch screen soda dispensers. These machines allow you to have other one hundred different variations of soda. I just found it cool that those two flatteners that Friedman said helped bring the world together, I got the grow up in it and couldn’t really imagine ever living without.

Tom Freedman’s Statements and argument regarding the world being flat is one of the more interesting topics that I have learned about in the past few weeks. The fact that technology is ever expanding and creating an easier communications tool for people is making as though the world is flat. Tom Fried man states that there are ten factors that have led to the flattening of our globe which are: the collapse of the berlin wall, Netscape, Workflow software, uploading, outsourcing, offshore business, the supply chain, In-forming, Insourcing, and The steroids.  I believe that he has a very valid point with his arguments because before significant events in technology and government took place communication was much harder and there used to be a need for face to face interaction. No people can communicate through various technologies weather that is cell phones, social media which includes: twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc. . . . In class we learned how Jet blue has made it possible for retirees in Salt Lake City to maintain all of your flight information and schedule/reschedule flights from their home. I also found it amazing that at select McDonald’s locations they are outsourcing their drive through services to a McDonald’s headquarter in Colorado. They are taking a picture of you and recording your order to see your spending patterns and to hopefully eliminate errors that may occur at the actual location where you are purchasing your meal. Another thing that he had mentioned in his speech was maintaining contact with loved ones through the power of text messages and social media outlets. Which is true because I can’t always physically be with the person I am trying to communicate with and finding a substitute for that is just as good sometimes. Text or Facebook is the next best solution, even Skype because you can at least see their emotions and reactions. I can contact my family in California in an instant and talk just about as long as I want all due to the phenomenon that the world hypothetically speaking has become flat due to our technological advancements and our never ending need for advancements.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

Thomas Friedman is a very well known author of the book titled the world is flat. He claims that the world is flat due to technology, globalization and other reasons. He believes that coast to coast connection has been reduced due to all of these factors. This is why he believes the world is “flat” because many countries across the world can communicate and connect with each other faster and efficiently. There are ten different factors that go into Friedman’s world flatteners. These flatteners include the fall of the Berlin wall in 89, Netscape going public in 95, development of work-flow software, uploading, and outsourcing. The other five flatteners are offshoring, supply chaining, insourcing, informing, and the steroids of technology. All of these factors support Friedman’s phrase that the world is flat. All of these make sense to why Friedman believes the earth is flat; they all have to do with the growth of business and technology that allows for everyone across the world to be connected and efficient. As an example we saw on the youtbe clip in class Friedman explains that he was calling southwest airlines to change his flight and he asked the receptionist where they were. The receptionist replied that she was in her bedroom in Salt Lake City and was working from her home for the airline company. This proves that many companies are finding ways to help their employees and their customers. The employees work out of their home and use their phones and computers to connect flights for customers. Also this shows how technology has evolved to make the world “flat”, by connecting people all over the world through technology. I believe that Friedman’s most significant world flattener is Supply Chaining. This is a technological revolution that led to the creation of networks comprised of companies, their suppliers, and their customers, all of which could collaborate and share information for increased efficiency. This is what southwest airlines have done to make their company more efficient. Many companies are using supply chaining to make their companies more efficient and a better experience for the customers. I believe that this is the most significant world flattener because it allows for companies to be more efficient and it allows for the entire world to be connected through technology.

The World is Flat HW2

Tom Friedman created the book on globalization called The World is Flat, which is a creative way to look at the world. Although it doesn’t literally mean that the world is flat and not round, but rather that the world is not exactly what we perceive it to be. He uses examples such as when you pull up to certain MacDonald’s and someone comes over the intercom saying hello can I take your order, those people are not in the store they are actually at MacDonald’s headquarters in Colorado which in turn saves the store thirty seconds for your order. Ten years ago something like this wasn’t even an idea, but because the world is moving so fast ideas like this are developing every day. He speaks much of globalization, and how fast it is moving in our era and in a sense is making our world an even smaller place. Even though some ideas may seem outrageous, they may be the most logical way to do things.

In our generation we are so used to using textbooks to study and learn from in the classroom. Because it is possible in the near future it may just be that all books will turn to E-books. Everyone may be using I pads in the future to just download books and only carry around that one single table. Not only will it be more cost efficient but it will also be more convenient for students.

In reality I think what Tom Friedman is trying to say is in our world now, whatever can be done, will be done. And that leaves you the question: will it be done by you, or will it be done to you. If you have an idea, don’t wait to share it with the world, because if you have a brilliant idea chances are someone else will have thought of that idea as well and they will publish is potentially changing the world, and making it even more “flat”

Friedmans 10 Flatteners

Out of all most significant flattener from Tom Freidman’s lecture regarding his book, The World is Flat the one main one i thought to myself was the most significant was what he said about the development of work flow and soft ware. Tom Freidman has said in his book or well quoting him that the development of work flow software enabled computer applications to work with one another without human intervention. Saying that the computer does all the work for us. I somewhat agree with him to a certain extent. Because he is right computers especially in the work force or business world do all of the work for us. From programs doing the math for us to robots basically building cars for us instead of humans doing it for themselves. We a a culture and a plant especially in the business field became plan, boring and flat out lazy. Our computers will do long accounting calculations for us when it comes to accounting, and as humans we just sit there and let it do it for us. Also he had said that it enabled faster, closer collaboration and coordination among employees, regardless of their  locations. Meaning that people do not interact with one another in the work place we rather send an email to each other instead of walking ten feet to that person and doing the entire conversation face to face. For instance you ever notice in a work place that people tend to gossip about one another more because they never see that person they just hear what people say about them instead of clearly knowing the true facts about a certain situation. Think about it people in society become or should I say became anti social due to the development of work flow software or technology in general. I agree with what Tom Freidman says. People have become so reliant on work flow software that human interaction is dead. Just ask yourself what happened to people talking to one another and mingling, or even just being friends face to face they rather have Facebook friends and talk to people on there instead of interacting with one another. Everyone and especially people in the work force, when it comes to the development of work flow software.

Ten Flatteners

Tom Friedman has ten flatteners which are: 1.) Collapse of the Berlin Wall, 2.) Netscape, 3.) Workflow Software, 4.) Uploading, 5.) Outsourcing, 6.) Offshoring, 7.) Supply-Chaining, 8.) Insourcing, 9.) In-forming, and 10.)The Steroids. I don’t think I have a specific one that intrigued me the most. I found a few of them to be interesting. He has really good points. It’s interesting to read someone of his generation’s perspective on all of the technological advances that have been made in the past ten years. When looking at In-forming which is about Google and how it is the most commonly used search engine and is being used by over one billion users a day compared to the 150 million users just a few years ago. Another one that was interesting was “uploading” I found this one to be right on the money because uploading and using software, blogs, and Wikipedia are essential for many people. I would even take it one step further and put social media such as twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. He uses the term “most disruptive force of all” I believe that all the new forms of social media have disrupted this generation. People have become so reliant on social media for a way of communication, which brings me to another good point he brings up. His number ten flattener is “The steroids” I thought this name was particularly different for what he was talking about but it makes sense. Things such as iphones, ipads, blackberries, Skype, and wireless. I know that for me all of these things are revolutionary. When he is talking about this it made me think of how relationships would be formed without the internet and text messaging. A lot of relationships at my age are a cyber relationship. When you’re not with the significant other you are texting. It is sad that you just have to get a phone that can use internet and you can be connected to so many things at once. I think the reason I liked all three of these is because they were about technology which is taking over the globe so it is a fascinating topic right now.

Hello bloggers my name is Thomas Miller and I am a junior at Nichols college and Im from Braintree Massachusetts. I lived in Braintree for 20 years of my life and I just recently moved to Whitman mass which is only a few towns away. When I am in Braintree I am a active member of the community and participate in a lot of events I am a member of the Italian American culture organization, I am also a member at the local sons of Italy lodge. Also my family owns a catering company called fasanos catering and its located in Braintree, I have been working there ever since I could carry a crate which was way back when I was about 10 years old. Now that I am old and stronger I have evolved and have been doing greater things for the company I am a cook and I am also a truckdriver and it’s really a great field to get into but its not what I want to do with my life I am pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice at Nichols and I have always been interested in that subject when I have freetime and I am home I am always watching those CSI shows and criminal minds and such. Since my family business is well  known some of the police officers come to our business with any needs for food and I always talk to them and tell them about my life maybe one day I will be able to work with them. This was up until last year I would spend my entire school year working at the catering on the weekends. But I got a new job as head groundskeeper for a little league baseball park, I coach a team there with my grandfather and its one of my passions and I wish I could do that for the rest of my life, but coaching doesn’t pay for little league. When I have free time I play soccer for the school and we won a conference championship my sophomore year. I expect to learn a lot in this class and I am anxious to learn more information.

My name is Greg Strootman and I was born on July 11, 1990 in Chester, Pennsylvania.  I graduated from Garnet Valley High School in 2008 and took two years off to play ice hockey before attending Nichols College.  During my two years off from school I lived in Long Beach, New York where I played junior ice hockey for the New York Apple Core.  For the two years off of school I basically did nothing but play hockey.  I had nothing to worry about at all and I was 18 years old living in an apartment on the beach with 2 other teammates.  Moving away at the age of 18 to play hockey was the best the best decision I have made and the best 2 years of my life.  Taking the 2 years off from school also added a pretty sweet bonus to school. I am a 21 year old sophomore which makes school a whole lot more enjoyable.  Currently I hold a summer job at Georgeo’s Fine Desserts where I deliver ice cream to local gas stations, stores, and etc.  I also work in the warehouse.  My duties in the warehouse include the following:  pick orders for the deliveries the next day, put incoming product away, and make sure everything that is in the inventory is in an orderly fashion.  I have been employed at Georgeo’s for over two years now and continue to work there until I graduate from Nichols.  I really enjoy this job because I work 5 days a week and have nights and weekends free to do whatever.
MIS is a new course for me and I do not know much about what is done throughout the semester, but I hope to learn a lot more about the computer and applications that can help me be successful in the near future.  Computers are a big part of today’s generation and this course will be valuable to me.  I am somewhat familiar with excel but it is not a strong point of mine and I am excited to learn more about this program.
The article was very informative and interesting to me because at some point I would like to start my own business and having an understanding of IT will help me in the long run.

intro

Hello class my name is Alistair Black and I am currently a junior here at Nichols College. When I first came to Nichols I was a Sport Management major but after realizing I was not only interested in working in sport I changed my major to Management and kept Sport Management as my minor. I am from West Stockbridge Massachusetts, which is a small town in western mass. West Stockbridge is part of Berkshire County which is a popular tourist attraction for people in the city who want to come and see leaves on the trees in the fall and get away to see nature. As locals we refer to them as “leaf peepers”.  I work year round at an Under Armour store at the Prime outlets in Lee MA and have worked there since the store opened in July of 2009. I enjoy working retail because every day I get paid to interact with people every day, even though I deal with plenty of rude customers as well. Also Under Armour has been a great company to work for and I hope to one day work at corporate for them.

From this course I hope to gain a basic understanding of management information systems and how they can benefit a business. One day I hope to be some type of manager in a business and I want to be able to have an understanding of all of the various technologies vital to the businesses success.

After reading the article I learned the importance of information systems in a in a business.  With technology changing at such a rapid rate it is important to have an Information Systems department that can keep up to date with the latest technologies for a business. I feel I am fairly good with new technologies and learning how to use them but I don’t think I would ever want to work in the MIS world because in the article it said it was a lot of individual office work and with hours up to 50 a week.

Introduction

My name is Samantha Claridge I am from Northfield, New Hampshire which is a small town in central NH. I have 1 younger brother and 1 older sister. I went to boarding school for high school, which is not at all like the common stereotype you normally here about. I am a sophomore here at Nichols College. I am the RA in North hall, as well as a student ambassador, Club president and Radio DJ for Nichols College Radio. I drive a 2012 Hyundai  Accent GLS, its silver. I just got it over christmas break. Originally I test drove a Jetta, but ended up falling in love with my Accent.

I am currently in the process of applying to the Disney College Program which would take place in Anaheim, California. I would work at the resort helping vacationers have a “magical” experience. I hope to work at the front desk, or as a lifeguard. I grew up on the water so I am a very good swimmer. The reason I picked California is because I have a lot of family there.

I am a pretty excitable person, which sometimes annoys people. Thats fine, to each there own I guess! I love love love twitter! I'm obsessed, I tweet about everything.

Over winter break I went to San Diego, California to visit my sister. It was the most fun i've had in years. Being on vacation WITHOUT parents, may just be my new favorite thing in the world. If you want to know anything else feel free to ask!

Hello, my name is Tim McCullough, I am 20 years old and currently a sophomore at Nichols studying General Business. I am from Framingham, MA  where I was born and lived in my entire life, and plan to when I am done with school. I have one sister who is 24 and she is one of my best friends. For the last couple of years I have worked for the Framingham Housing Authority, where I cut lawns all day long. It is a good job, but when it is over 90 degrees outside then the job becomes no fun. When I have free time I enjoy spending that time at my house in New Hampshire riding jet-ski's  and dirt-biking with some of my friends. I don’t spend much time inside, I would rather be outside no matter the weather. During this class I hope to be able to use computers more to their potential and get my money’s worth out of them because I really don;t know how to use computers that good. And because computers are becoming the way to do business I think that its really important to learn computers and the technology that can make your life easier. The article that was published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, states that the field of IT is growing very rapidly and pays employees very good for their services, the article talks about the education that is needed and just a college degree will get you into the door at most companies, but having an MBA will help you get a job which is worth it if you like working with computers.

Hello

Hi, my name is Stephen Smedberg I was born on April 7th 1989 in Worcester Massachusetts where I still live now. I am an only child but have 3 step siblings who have brought me a combined 6 nieces and nephews who are awesome. My mother and step fathers names are Robin and Fernando Escobar they are great and help me out when I need a hand with something.

I work for the Department of Youth Services in a facility for committed youths in the juvenile system as a Direct Care Worker.  Every one of the committed youths has either a drug or alcohol addiction and has been convicted of a crime. I work directly with the youths as essentially a guard and a mentor; I talk to them about their problems and try to help them get through everything that they are dealing with usually through humor or sarcasm. The job has really taught me a lot about life and it has taught me a lot about myself, it has prepared me for quite a bit.

I am a senior in my last semester and I am marketing major. I like to ride my motor cycle I have a 1975 Harley Sportster, hang out with friends, pick up football games, and sleeping when I get a chance to. I also really like tattoos I have three of them currently and plan on getting another piece of work done sometime within the year.  I used to play rugby for the college and intend to this spring season it’s a lot of fun and a great way to get out any and all aggression you may have. In this course I hope to gain a better knowledge of management information systems and become better rounded with my technology skills.

The article is interesting and it seems that Management Information Systems is a great field to get involved with. Technology is growing at a rapid rate and keeping up with it must be hard task which makes sense why people in the field are doing well for themselves financially.

Thank you for reading a little bit about me!

Wes Carter Intro

Hello, my name is Wes Carter I'm from Wilbraham, MA, Home of Friendly's Ice Cream Corporation. I’m currently a junior at
Nichols College where I’m a General Business major. After college, I intend to use my
knowledge gained here to ultimately own my own business. My first name Wesley was chosen by my father who learned the name from a sitcom in the ‘80’s. My middle name Henry was after my grandfather Henry Carter who is a World War 2 Veteran. My last name Carter was originally Charette prior to my ancestors moving to America from Canada in the 1900’s. My great-grandfather wanted our family to have a less “immigrant-like” name, so he changed it to a strong English last name. In fact, my whole name is practically all English but I’m not even English, I’m French Canadian, Native American (Mic-Mac and Cherokee tribes) Polish and Dutch.

I have been a working tax-payer since 2006. At age 16, I began working at Leslie's Pool Supply
as a Sales Associate. I have worked as a seasonal employee each year since
2006.In 2010, after consistent summers of sales experience I was promoted to Lead Sales Associate. Other
than working for a pool supply company, I have also worked with my father as a
painter since 2007. I understand the importance of having working information
systems in everyday business. I have been interested in business since I was in
middle school and I have learned that understanding new technologies is a key
component of becoming a successful businessman. In my spare time, I enjoy
managing sport teams, playing soccer, hockey, and snowboarding. Since freshman year in highschool in high school I have been managing sports teams which have given me exquisite experience in the management field. I have managed over 150+ athletes in both soccer and hockey. It began as a hobby and developed into a business where my soccer team, Wilbraham FC now fields top Division 1 athletes who have potential to play professionally.

Throughout this class, I hope to gain
more knowledge about how companies use their own techniques to go about their
everyday business with management information systems. While working with Leslie’s, I have been tested with
computers software and have learned firsthand that computers can confuse, distress, and enrage employees. I also understand the importance of information systems in the everyday business world as many businesses operate through computers.

The article about the career possibilities in information systems can pay a decent salary if properly prepared through an undergraduate program as well as obtaining an MBA. I have been interested in computers in my past, I just don't feel like I'm as witty as others when it comes to engineering information systems.

Hello my name is David Lavoie I come from a small town in Connecticut the name of the town is called Ellington and it’s a small town where everyone knows everyone and they always say hello to you. My past work experience is that I have worked in two restaurants one was called katies and the other was called roseies restaurant and catering company but now I work at a local supermarket called price choppers and I work in the deli there. My grade level is I am a sophomore .my major is sports management. Some of my hobbies include fishing, hunting, I also like to ride my atv

Yamaha

and hangout with friends. I play A sport here at Nichols I play rugby and I have been playing here for two years now and before that I played football. My favorite sports teams are the Boston  red sox’s , The New England patriots, and Uconn men’s basketball. What I hope to get out of this class is a better understanding of how to use these new technologies better to benefit a company so then the business I work for or own will do better because I will have learned that tool. What I thought about this article was that I think that it is right and it is a growing field that a lot of people can get into and its only a field that will keep growing and more people will start to join it. Also I was surprised at the amount of schooling you have to go through in order to do work in this type of field but it does make sense because there are so many things that could go wrong and you have to be able to fix them in a hurry. Another thing was I was surprised at how much these people are making in this field of work.

I hope to learn a lot of interesting fact about MIS, because I am technologically inclined so I look forward to learning more about information systems. I look forward to learning about how new age technology effects large companies.
The articled posted on the Moodle has valid information about MIS. Informational systems are extremely vital in any and all companies. Although it may be interesting to learn about, I don’t think I would ever take up a job in the informational system field, considering I was reading that the hours can be extremely long and painful and many people in the MIS field can work over 50 hours a week on a regular basis.

This is Nyon cat. with a pop tart body who farts rainbows?

My name is Max Curto I am a junior at Nichols College. I play rugby and I work as an ambassador on campus giving tours to high school students and other guests. When I am at home I work for Budweiser delivering beer to different bars and package stores around the Boston area. I live in Braintree Mass which is right outside of the city of Boston. For hobbies I go snowboarding and I play softball in the summer, I also enjoy fishing and playing golf. I come from a large family, I have eight people in my family, I have two older brothers and I am a quadruplet. I have three other brothers that look identical to me. It is fun having three other brothers the same age as you, we play sports together and we have all been playing the same sports since I could remember. We all go to Nichols and we live together. It is defiantly a great time attending the same school as my brothers and we are looking forward to this semester. In this class I hope to learn more about information systems and to get more familiar with using technology. I am not good with computers and other technology but I hope this class helps me get more familiar with computers and other technology systems. This article describes the importance of Information and technology managers in the workplace. These careers are up and coming and they are in high demand. I believe that businesses would not be able to operate efficiently without these managers. The business world seems to be relying more on information systems and if businesses want to be successful in the future they will have to use these systems. Also if businesses want to stay in business they have to be able to use these information systems and they will have to hire IT managers to operate these systems. If businesses do not adapt and use IT systems and hire managers to operate these systems they will not be successful in the future. I am looking forward to the semester and I hopefully will get more familiar with information systems at the end of the semester.
