Wal-Mart Radio Tags to Track Clothing
I read the article Wal-Mart to put Radio Tags on Clothes and
I think it is like the debate we had in class the other day. Even though the argument was lost to
the Pro team, I agree with the Con team one hundred percent. I do not want people being able to
track what I am buying and I feel as though Wal-mart doing this is making us
one step closer to being tracked.
This tracker will be able to track the article of clothes after it has
left the store and I think that is so wrong. They should stop the tracker once the pants are purchased,
if they are sent back to the manufacturer they don’t need to know that its not
there fault it is the manufacturer.
Wal-Mart is a distributor not a manufacturer, they shouldn’t be worrying
about what is happening after a product has left their store. I think this again is a “big brother”
issue and it is so messed up that they want to track there clothes, I get that
it will cut the amount of stuff that is stolen but it is still wrong to track
it after it leaves the store.
I feel as though if this was a high end store that was
selling very expensive and good quality clothes and merchandise then it should
be tracked but it is Wal-Mart brand clothing that could rip after a few
wears. Its not the best quality
and doesn’t need to be tracked. I
feel as though this is just a government system that is being tested on clothes
as opposed to people.
I hope my feelings do not offend anyone I just think what
this is doing is extremely wrong and corrupt. Wal-mart is a very popular chain but tracking their clothes
is going to make people feel like they are being watched while buying the
clothes and could potentially effect the amount of clothes sold.
Personally I think this will effect Wal-Marts business and I
think it is a terrible idea, they should think twice before putting this into
effect.
I am going to have to agree with you on this topic I also think that it is wrong for Wal-Mart to insert these chips into their clothing so they can track where they are at all times I think that this is probably the weirdest thing I have heard of a company doing because yea I could see the theft would go down and it would make doing inventory a lot easier but it would still be creepy to know that they are watching you after you just bought something from their store and they can follow it and I am very surprised that the government would even allow something like this because its almost an invasion of privacy for what they are going to do with them and the only real life reasons they would ever use these is to one do inventory easier and two maybe keep track of what you are buying and maybe send you coupons for those items and third keep theft down.
ReplyDeleteJensen, though I am proud and confident that we won the debate for the right reason, I completely agree with the points you are making. In some cases this RFID technology has gone out of control and is being used way to frequently, however I strongly believe that it is not all bad, and some versions of this technology could really help different industries. As you can read in my post, it will greatly help the medical and health fields. Hospitals and blood banks can only benefit from this technology. Like I said I completely support your opinion on how Walmart is using the track system past the store. However, I hope you can see after reading my post how it can be beneficial to other users.
ReplyDeleteHey Jensen, I also agree with your blog post about how Wal-Mart is putting RFID chips into their clothing is wrong on every level. Yes I could see that these chips could almost eliminate theft from Wal-Mart stores because they would be able to track every single product to its exact location. It would also make the extremely long inventory process a lot easy and shorter. However it is completely wrong for Wal-Mart to be able to track its clothing once the customer has purchased it. Once I purchase anything from a store it becomes my personal property and the vendor Wal-Mart no longer has the right to track the product. For example this would give Wal-Mart the power to track everyplace a pair a pair of jeans purchases from them went, thus allowing them to track your every move. To me this should not be legal and I feel our government would not be able to allow this. The only way I can see this working is if the RFID chip is removed by the cashier after the product is purchased. Lastly I enjoyed your blog Jensen!
